Steven G. Opilla established JRC in 1990. A long time coffee industry employee Steve began his coffee career in customer service, so he understands and appreciates the need for quality and dependability.

The original concept was to be an exclusive office coffee provider using only one line of coffee equipment. This quickly changed as Steve realized his convenience store contacts and expertise in all types of coffee machines enabled the company to get a jump start into institutional distribution. Additional products and equipment were continually added. Today JRC handles over 500 coffee and coffee related items and sells and services 15 different brands of beverage machines. Continually growing we have branched out into distribution of express bars, salad dressings, flavored syrups and spices.

James River Coffee now roasts its coffee locally to achieve its greatest potential and customers often notice that their order of coffee is still warm, indicating just how recently it was roasted. We buy all of our green coffee directly from our broker in Staten Island, New York, which arrives from origins all over the world. It takes only a single day for the coffee to ship from New York to Midlothian, which further ensures that our coffee is the freshest possible product. Although green coffee has a six month shelf life, we receive large weekly orders to ensure that our stock is constantly rotating.

Now that we know we have very fresh coffee, it is up to us to bring out its best in the roasting process. We use a 'Made in the USA', Diedrich 30lb. Drum Coffee Roaster. The main reason we chose Diedrich is because of their radiant heat source rather than open flame gas. Radiant heat guarantees a more even, full roast that is achieved by the roastmaster time and time again. In addition to radiant heat, the Diedrich roaster has one of the most powerful exhaust fans in the Industry. This power enables our roaster to extract the chaff from the coffee bean in a most efficient manner thereby leaving behind 100% pure gourmet coffee. Our roastmaster applies his extensive knowledge and experience to adjust the air flow and duration of roast to bring our coffee to its full bodied richness that is our hallmark.

Our whole bean bulk coffee is packaged and heat sealed in 1 to 5lb. bags. If possible, we ship these orders the same day. Since we receive new shipments of green beans every week, we make room by shipping out all of our "just roasted coffee". No coffee sits on our shelf for more than a week.
